Long story short
LadyBug Boats is owned by Kenneth Martin, Jr. Ken began his career in boat building in 1982 when he followed his father, Ken, Sr. as a journeyman boat builder at Cape Dory Yachts of Taunton, Massachusetts. In 1985 he went to Sagamore Bridge Marine in Bourne, MA where he was a fiberglass repairman and yacht carpenter. Leaving Sagamore, he joined Bassett Boats in Florida and was their warranty manager for several years. Ken returned to the North East in 1997 and joined Cape Marine as service manager where he received the prestigious Master Marine Technician award by Mercury Marine. He also operated his own fishing charters and is a licensed captain.
While at Cape Marine he reconstructed several derelict boats as a side-line. In 1999 he was asked by a customer if he would build her a small dinghy for her cruiser. He agreed. The customer wanted the boat painted red with black dots: the first “LadyBug” boat. The word spread through the boating community on the Cape and soon there were LadyBug Boats all around the area. In 2002 another customer asked for an 18 foot skiff based on the Brockway LYS design. Ken built the boat and tested it with a 30 horsepower outboard. It was surprisingly fast, dry and stable, and Ken knew that he had a winner. Currently LadyBug Boats is Ken’s sole professional interest. He is joined by a staff of experienced boat builders.
